It’s time for us all to respond to the challenges facing the Australian environment

The Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife congratulates Australia’s amazing scientific community and the deep work that has gone into researching, writing, and producing the 2021 State of the Environment Report. We also acknowledge the Minister for the Environment and Water, The Hon Tanya Plibersek, on releasing this important report, which includes leadership from 13 First Nations authors.

The Minister has outlined what the government will do to protect, restore, and actively manage our landscapes and waterways, including expanding the national estate; something that the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife has actively done for more than 50 years. Our commitment to growing national parks and saving species remains firm, helping to address key issues highlighted in the report, including declining biodiversity, loss of habitat, and recovery from droughts, bushfires and floods.

While it can seem an overwhelming task, we can also take action and personally contribute to improving environmental outcomes that will benefit future generations. As we digest some of the distressing findings that the latest State of the Environment Report has identified, here are five actions everyone can take today to help combat the challenges that lie ahead.

1. Reduce, reuse, recycle and repair where possible – in the workplace, in the home and in the community.

2. Save water – think about your daily routine and make small incremental changes that will make a significant difference over time.

3. Shop local and choose sustainable products – there is more choice than ever on our own doorstep.

4. Compost food scraps – reduce waste and enrich your own backyard.

5. Volunteer to plant seeds and trees, care for wildlife, or join an environmental, clean up or land care organisation. And remember that your backyard is a small part of our big backyard – the many National Parks across Australia. Help support our big backyard and learn how to transform your own garden into a green corridor; a safe and inviting habitat and wildlife haven.
